"It is Written..."

Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. And after He had fasted forty days and forty nights, He then became hungry. And the tempter came and said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread.”Matthew 4:1-3 (NASB1995)

I believe it is not a coincidence that the devil tried to entice Jesus with bread, after He became hungry. Jesus, our High Priest, was tempted in every way as we are, but He did not sin. (See Hebrews 4:15) Instead, He spoke what was written in the Word of God. He answered and said, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God.’” (See Matthew 4:4)  When the devil had finished tempting Jesus, he left him until the next opportunity came. (Luke 4:13 NLT)

Our enemy knows how to entice us. He has had a lot of practice. First Peter 5:8 (NKJV) tells us to be sober, be vigilant; because our adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. But First Corinthians 10:13 (NLT) says: The temptations in your life are no different from what others experience. And God is faithful. He will not allow the temptation to be more than you can stand. When you are tempted, he will show you a way out so that you can endure. May we follow the example of Jesus and continually speak what is written in the Word of God, when temptations come. Submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. (See James 4:7) Amen.
