“WHY?”
Then Gideon said to him, “O my lord, if Yahweh is with us, why then has all this happened to us? And where are all His wondrous deeds which our fathers recounted to us, saying, ‘Did not Yahweh bring us up from Egypt?’ But now Yahweh has abandoned us and given us into the hand of Midian.” —Judges 6:13 (LSB)
We may sometimes wonder “why?” certain things are happening to us, but the more important thing is “WHO” is with us in the midst of all the trials and tribulations. As Yahweh told Gideon in Judges 6:16 (AMP), He will certainly be with you. And if God is for us, who can be [successful] against us? (See Romans 8:31 AMP) When you go through deep waters, He will be with you. When you go through rivers of difficulty, you will not drown. When you walk through the fire of oppression, you will not be burned up; the flames will not consume you. (See Isaiah 43:2 NLT) And thanks be to God, who always leads us in triumph in Christ… (See 2 Corinthians 2:14 NASB1995)
And Yahweh did not abandon the Israelites. They were experiencing the consequences of their choices. The curse for not listening to the commands of Yahweh, as they had been warned about the blessings and the curses in Deuteronomy 11:26-28. Judges 6:1 (LSB) says, the sons of Israel did what was evil in the eyes of Yahweh; and Yahweh gave them into the hands of Midian seven years. His ear was always open to hear their cries, and He faithfully sent them judges to rescue the Israelites from their enemies, again and again. (See Judges 2:16)
